Fabolous had a lot of reasons to celebrate over the holiday weekend.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced last Wednesday, November 27, that the New York native's smash hit "Breathe" is certified gold and platinum after the record sold over 1 million copies. The song was released in 2004 as the lead single of his third studio album Real Talk. Shortly after the song dropped, "Breathe" reached the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 and was named one of the best songs of the 2000s by Complex. Fabolous recently explained how the song changed his career during an interview with Carmelo Anthony and Mero on their 7PM in Brooklyn podcast.
“I’m going too far one way and it might get to a point where people don’t even know you even rap or put you in the category,” Fab recalled. “At the time radio was dominated by you had to make those songs to get on radio.”
“I go back a little bit," he added. "That’s where ‘Breathe’ came from — I’m going too far one way.”
After the news about "Breathe" went viral, fans began to weigh in on the song's success. Many people were shocked that it took this long to earn both certifications. Others said the song went platinum in their homes and mp3 players years ago.
"HOW??! Bro this record was EVERYWHERE back in the day," one fans said. "I can’t believe this s**t JUST going play. It was like 3X 💎 IN THE STREETS!!!"
